Real-economy B2B payments settled in stablecoins reached somewhere between $150 billion and $230 billion in 2025, growing at roughly 65% a year according to a joint analysis by Boston Consulting Group and blockchain data provider Allium published in January 2026.
That's still a rounding error next to the roughly $200 trillion global B2B payments market, but it’s definitely concentrated around a niche where traditional banking has been falling short: cross-border settlement, treasury positioning between related entities, and payments that need to clear on a weekend.
This guide walks through what's actually happening under the hood, what it costs compared with your existing rails, and how to think about whether it's worth exploring for your business.
Why businesses are looking at crypto rails at all
Traditional cross-border B2B payment infrastructure has some well-documented, structural problems. The U.S. Faster Payments Council's Cross-Border Payments Work Group (a group sponsored by Mastercard that includes payments experts from major banks and fintech infrastructure providers) published an analysis in February 2026 identifying seven recurring frictions in the current system:
- Settlement speed. Correspondent banking routinely delays fund availability by days, and doesn't operate on weekends.
- High, unpredictable costs. Multiple intermediaries and FX spreads stack up in ways that are hard for a payer to see in advance.
- Fragmented infrastructure. Payment rails don't talk to each other, so a business sending money through multiple corridors deals with multiple sets of rules and integrations.
- Data gaps. Remittance data often isn't structured enough for straight-through reconciliation with a company's own accounting systems.
- FX and liquidity friction. Pre-funding requirements tie up working capital that could otherwise be deployed.
- Compliance overhead. KYC and AML checks are frequently duplicated at every hop in the chain.
- Fraud and integrity risk. More intermediaries create more points where things can go wrong.
None of these problems are new, but they are more jarring for companies that are moving money across borders regularly, in higher volumes, or on tighter timelines than the correspondent banking system was designed to support. Finance teams that are looking for a way to skirt these frictions are far more interested in solving problems than exploring crypto as an asset class.
What actually happens when a business pays or gets paid in crypto
Most B2B crypto payments run through what researchers at Harvard Business School, in a February 2026 paper comparing bank, fintech, and stablecoin payment rails, call a "stablecoin sandwich."
The mechanics are straightforward:
- The paying business converts local fiat currency into a dollar-pegged stablecoin (most commonly USDT or USDC), usually through a centralised exchange or a regulated on-ramp provider.
- That stablecoin moves across a public blockchain to the recipient's wallet during a transfer that typically settles in minutes and, on most networks, costs a fraction of a cent to a few dollars in network fees.
- The recipient converts the stablecoin back into their own local fiat currency through an off-ramp provider or exchange.
Despite the common pitch that crypto payments cut out the middleman, a payment almost never goes from fiat to blockchain to fiat with nothing else touching it. Steps 1 and 3 still run through centralised exchanges, and those exchanges charge their own trading fee, their own withdrawal fee, and apply their own FX spread when converting between the stablecoin and local currency.
Whether crypto is actually cheaper than your bank is for a given payment lives entirely in those two conversion legs, not the blockchain transfer. Crypto rails don't remove intermediaries, they swap bank intermediaries for exchange intermediaries.
And whether you’re using crypto or a bank, it’s important to evaluate how many hoops your money has to jump through and what each one will cost for that specific corridor and transfer size.
The real cost comparison
Pulling from the Harvard researchers' basis-point analysis of actual transfer costs across rails:
- Traditional bank wires through the SWIFT correspondent network carry all-in FX markups often in the 200–400+ basis point range for retail-scale transfers, even for the most liquid currency pairs (EUR, GBP, JPY against USD), a gap the researchers attribute to correspondent liquidity costs and banks' pricing power rather than genuine market illiquidity.
- Non-bank money transfer operators (Wise, Remitly, and similar) compress that materially, averaging roughly 40–150 basis points for developed-market corridors at larger transfer sizes, thanks to internal netting of customer flows and pre-funded local liquidity.
- Stablecoin rails, for major currency pairs, price the FX leg itself close to benchmark rates, but layer on explicit exchange trading fees, blockchain network (gas) fees, and fixed withdrawal charges, which can be a hard pill to swallow on smaller transfers (but shrink with scale).
The costs that matter for a real comparison are the full stack, including the FX markup, the trading fee, the network fee, and the withdrawal fee and not whichever single number a provider chooses to lead with.
The research also shows that in countries with capital controls, stablecoin-implied exchange rates are sometimes more favourable than official benchmark rates for outbound US-dollar transfers, because local users will pay a premium for dollar exposure where capital controls restrict it.
Where crypto rails actually pull ahead today
According to BCG/Allium research, B2B payments make up around 40% of real-economy stablecoin payment volume, the single largest category, ahead of consumer-to-consumer remittances and consumer-to-business payments.
Businesses use stablecoin rails most where correspondent banking is weakest, including cross-border supplier settlement, intercompany treasury positioning, and payments that need to move outside standard banking hours.
TRON remains the dominant settlement rail for real-economy stablecoin payments by a wide margin, thanks to very low transaction fees and deep USDT liquidity, but larger, more regulated institutions tend to favour networks like Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Smart Chain for their stronger compliance tooling and analytics support, even at a higher per-transaction cost.
What this looks like in practice, operationally
Once a business has funded its account and a trade request comes in, an off-ramp settlement (crypto converted to fiat, deposited to a bank account) commonly clears within minutes provided the provider has enough standing liquidity already positioned to cover it.
Where a single trade is unusually large relative to that provider's normal liquidity buffer, it can take twenty to thirty minutes while additional liquidity is drawn down against a credit line.
The point for a finance team evaluating a provider is that "instant settlement" claims are conditional on the provider's liquidity depth for your transfer size, not a fixed property of the blockchain itself.
Getting started: a checklist for finance teams
Before evaluating any crypto payment provider, work through these questions:
- What corridor and currency pair are you actually moving money on? Cost and speed advantages vary enormously by corridor. A EUR/USD transfer looks very different from a corridor into a capital-controlled market.
- What's your typical transfer size? Fixed fees (withdrawal charges, gas fees) matter far more, proportionally, on smaller transfers. At scale, the comparison shifts toward FX markup and trading fees.
- Have you priced the full fee stack and not the headline rate? Ask any provider, crypto or traditional, to itemize: FX markup, explicit trading/wire fee, network/gas fee (if applicable), and withdrawal fee.
- Do you need weekend or 24/7 settlement? This is one of the clearest structural advantages on-chain rails have over correspondent banking today.
- How deep is the provider's liquidity for your typical trade size? Ask what happens (and how long it takes) when a trade exceeds their standing liquidity buffer.
- What's your compliance posture? KYC/AML requirements apply regardless of rail; confirm how the provider's onboarding maps to your existing due-diligence obligations.
- Is this a recurring flow or a one-off? Recurring, predictable flows (supplier settlement, intercompany transfers) are where the frictions in traditional rails compound most, and where the case for evaluating an alternative rail is strongest.
For many corridors and transfer sizes, a well-negotiated bank relationship or an established money transfer operator will still be the cheaper, simpler option. But for the specific, structural frictions in cross-border B2B settlement, stablecoin rails are increasingly where finance teams are finding a real answer, provided they go in pricing the full cost stack rather than the headline pitch.
